Go Electric!
Benefits of Electric-Powered Appliances in Condominium Buildings
Getting Ahead of the Trend
Many parts of the world, including New York City, are trending toward ditching gas and oil-based appliances and heating equipment in favor of electric. States such as New York have already passed bans and phase-outs of fossil fuel-based equipment in new residential buildings. Why invest in gas and oil-based products when you’ll have to switch in a few years’ time? Additionally, as fewer homes and apartment buildings use gas and oil, obtaining support and service for those products, as well as the gas and oil infrastructure itself, will be more difficult and expensive to obtain.
Health and Safety
Gas stoves emit toxic nitrogen dioxide fumes on a regular basis, likely exposing tens of millions of people to levels of indoor air pollution that would be illegal under outdoor air quality standards. On the other hand, electric stoves have no open flame thus eliminating the emission of toxic fumes.
Oil and gas-based boilers, furnaces and water heaters can leak deadly carbon monoxide, especially if the equipment is poorly maintained, whereas electric-based HVAC equipment poses no risk of carbon monoxide leaks.
Energy Efficiency and Carbon Footprint
Electric-powered heat pump systems and water heaters are significantly more efficient than traditional gas or oil-powered systems, and induction stovetops heat up three times faster than gas stoves. While gas and oil are currently cheaper than electricity in most states, there are many government programs offering cash rebates, tax incentives, and utilities savings for switching to electric heating sources and appliances. Additionally, the US government is investing heavily in electricity infrastructure, which will lead to lower electricity prices over time. Finally, electricity is a much cleaner energy source than gas and oil, thus reducing your carbon footprint.
